Twin Turbo 300ZX
One car I have not noticed as much on the streets is the Nissan turbo 300ZX. During high school, I would always see the same pearl white turbo 300ZX while I was on the buss, and that was really the only 300ZX I had ever seen in real life, besides the ones at car shows. I
don’t know why there isn’t more, but I happened to run across Matt’s 1990 Twin Turbo Nissan Fairlady Z32/300ZX TT. His twin turbo 300ZX sports two upgraded turbos producing 450 horsepower, making this one of those cars you just shouldn’t mess with.
Making this car unique to many of you who may be American viewers of this twin turbo 300ZX, is the cars right-hand drive, because the car is straight from Japan. Matt imported the car to British Columbia, where it can be seen cruising the streets. My hopes in showing this car is to show people in the States that the 300ZX is worth tuning.
Like I’ve mentioned before in earlier articles, there is a local cruising highway where there are hundreds of tuned cars every weekend cruising in spring, summer, and fall. On that road, you
will see anything from Dodge Vipers to boosted Civics, along with many other cars in between there. Out of all the times I have gone there, and all the cars I’ve seen there, I think I’ve only seen one 300ZX, which of course was totally stock, too.
You also don’t see many featured in car magazines as the front page, feature car, tuner car of the month, or anything special similar to that, and this shows the lack of 300ZX tuning here in the states. I think there are new grounds still to be presented to auto tuners, that the 300ZX has what it takes to “whoop some ass” in an import, like Matt’s twin turbo 300ZX.
Finally, moving into the cars features, we’ll start with Matt’s engine. For a turbo addict, one
turbo usually is a substantial fix for a turbo addiction. However, Matt wanted to overdose and get the twin turbo 300ZX. After upgrading the turbos, the clutch, flywheel, adding on a Jasma cat-back exhaust system, and upgrading the LSD, he has got this 300ZX running 450 horsepower. For a V6, that’s not bad at all!
To supplement the turbos, he has dual HKS blow-off valves, side-mount
intercoolers, and a HKS air-intake system to feed air into the engine. Supporting all this power is the JIC Magic coilover adjustable suspension, with a
Carbing front strut bar straightening out the car around turns.
On the outside of the car, it has a full Bomex body kit, with a repainted Stillen GTZ rear valiance on the back creating the cars base image. Matt then has a JSpec 99 center taillight, super white Xenon HID headlights, and clear JDM side-markers creating a bright, modified image at night.
Also, this car is a slicktop. From what Matt told me, the twin turbo 300ZX slicktop is super rare in the United States, since they only made the n/a 300ZX with the hard top in the US. The only way for one to get the stock TT 300ZX with the slicktop is to get it from Japan, like Matt
did. It is only in Japan where they made both the n/a and turbo slicktops.
The interior of the car is very clean; however, the car has everything any driver in the seat of this twin turbo 300ZX would need to have full control over the vehicle, right in front of themselves. For instance, a BLITZ FATT turbo timer, with a Greddy PRofic Type S boost
controller, Greddy boost gauge, and the 300 KMs Nismo gauge cluster all feed the necessary
information to the driver, to keep track of everything while the 450 horses are released.
Also inside the car, Matt’s got a rear-view mirror and silver shiftknob from Razo, with Lonza Racing pedals to finish up the interior accessories in this 300ZX. For audio and video, he’s
got a Clarion 6.5″ LCD touch flip screen in the dash, with a portable Magellan navigation system, and some 6″ speakers all the way around. This all completes the basics of what every driver would need to be on the road for short races or long touring trips, without having to break the bank too much.
The entire car sits on 2 piece Wise Sports JDM 17″ rims, with 235/45RZ 17’s Nexan N7000 tires in the front and 255/40RZ 17’s Nexan N7000 tires in the back. I had Nexan N7000 tires on my 18″ white Motegi rims, and they were some very nice tires. Mine were not all-season tires like Matt’s are, so the few times I had them on
in the winter, it wasn’t to pretty. But, take the tires onto any road in 60 degree+ temperatures and they are some mean ass tires. Taking these tires, and putting them on some JDM 2 piece silver rims on a twin turbo 300ZX straight from Japan is pritty darn sick. JDM features always keeps the overall feel of the car very clean and fresh, exactly how this car
looks.
Hopefully, Matt’s Twin Turbo 300ZX inspires some more people in the U.S. to start tuning the 300ZX. It provides power, luxury features, JDM feeling, and an overall beastly machine if tuned correctly. Matt’s definitely proved that it can be done with this 450 horsepowered twin turbo 300ZX, which surely sets a solid pace for future 300ZX cars that are picked to be featured on TurboAddict.com.
